On July 3, 2019, California was the first state in the nation to pass The Crown Act (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), a law that prohibits discrimination over natural hair. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the CROWN Act into law, banning employers and schools from discriminating against hairstyles such as locs, braids, afros, and twists. New York was the next state to pass such a law. Today, over 24 states have passed the CROWN Act. It has failed to pass nationally.
