Gail Mitchell, a native of Chicago and born to Jamaican-born immigrants, is Executive Director of Loc'd Life Foundation. She is a loc wearer of 18 years and has been through her own natural hair journey from relaxed hair, to a loose natural, to locs. She is an Associate Professor of Communication Design at Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, and has been showing her students the insights of the publishing industry. Through the Foundation, she hopes to change the narrative of locs as not just a style, but the ultimate form of self expression.
Gail Mitchell has worked in Chicago's design industry for over 20 years, working in roles at the Chicago Tribune, Associated Publications (the publisher of Sophisticate's Black Hair Styles and Care Guide), Johnson Publishing Company (Jet Magazine), [culture] Magazine, and the Chicago Defender.
